One of the most dominant athletes in CrossFit, Canadian Patrick Vellner, has announced that he will not compete in the 2025 CrossFit Games, referencing the departure of Lazar Đukić in the previous edition as a key factor in his decision.
“I’ve decided not to compete in the 2025 CrossFit Games season. Sometimes, the best way to push for change is to take action, and this year I’m taking a stand by voting with my feet,” Vellner shared on Instagram, encouraging followers to swipe through a series of images for more details.
Vellner, a multiple-time podium finisher at the CrossFit Games, expressed frustration over CrossFit’s leadership, stating that years of athlete concerns about safety, fairness, and the direction of the sport have been ignored.

“For years, I’ve dedicated an enormous amount of time, energy, and passion to the CrossFit Games season, but it has become increasingly difficult to justify that commitment. I can’t continue to pour my heart into an organization that doesn’t seem to support its athletes.”
Citing Lazar Đukić’s Tragic Death as a Catalyst
Vellner pointed to the tragic passing of Lazar Đukić in 2024 as a turning point, believing that decisions made by the CrossFit Games leadership contributed to the circumstances.
“Last summer, I lost a friend. Lazar’s death was a tragedy, and while multiple factors were at play, I believe leadership decisions within the CrossFit Games team played a role. CrossFit Inc.’s response—or lack thereof—has made one thing clear: meaningful change is not coming anytime soon.”
Calling for Athlete Safety Reforms
Vellner’s statement highlights the need for a truly independent safety council with decision-making power during the CrossFit Games, as well as a commitment to improving athlete communication and well-being.
“For our sport to evolve, athlete concerns, safety, and well-being must be a priority—not dismissed, belittled, or ignored. I’m done being patient and trusting, and I’m done shouting into the void.”
With Vellner stepping away, his absence marks a major blow to the 2025 CrossFit Games, raising serious questions about the future of athlete relations and competition standards.
